Building confidence, wellbeing, and healthy habits through women-only fitness sessions
The Women’s Fitness Classes project was Aspire Burnley’s first community fitness initiative, created to support BAME women facing barriers to physical activity, confidence, and wellbeing. The programme provided a safe, women-only environment where participants could engage in structured exercise without feeling intimidated or uncomfortable.
Delivered over six weeks at Olive High, the project focused on improving physical mobility, mental wellbeing, and self-confidence, while encouraging women to build healthy routines they could continue independently beyond the sessions.
What the Project Delivered
The programme delivered six structured fitness sessions over a six-week period, reaching 55 women from the local community. Sessions were led by a qualified female fitness instructor, ensuring a culturally sensitive, welcoming, and supportive atmosphere.
Demand for the sessions was high, with all places filled within days of promotion. Word-of-mouth played a significant role, as participants shared their positive experiences with friends and family. Marketing through community networks and social media helped ensure strong engagement throughout the project.

Impact and Outcomes
Feedback from participants highlighted significant improvements in confidence, motivation, and attitudes towards exercise. Many women described the sessions as the highlight of their week, particularly valuing the relaxed setting, supportive instructor, and women-only environment.
The project helped participants overcome fear and discomfort associated with gyms and fitness spaces. Several women reported feeling empowered to continue exercising independently, having gained both the knowledge and confidence to take the next steps in their fitness journey.
